Anthony C. Speights, MD
Anthony Speights, M.D., joined the Department of Family Medicine and Rural Health as an Assistant Professor in 2014 after 5 years in private practice and 5 years in public health.
Upon completing his residency, Dr. Speights worked for Jackson Hospital in Marianna (the site of the FSU-COM Marianna Rural Program) for 5 years. He served as a staff physician and the Chief of Surgery for 2 years. He also served as third year OBGYN Clerkship Faculty for the College of Medicine during that time.
After leaving the hospital he was employed as the Medical Executive Director and Specialty Care Physician for the Florida Department of Health in Jackson County, providing HIV, STI and Family Planning services. From 2014-2018 he served as Director of Rural Medical Education. In that position, he worked diligently to enhance the existing rural curriculum as well as create new rural opportunities for students.
In 2015, he helped facilitate the transition of the Rural Program in Marianna from a traditional clerkship site into a Longitudinal Integrated Clerkship (LIC), which has become a popular destination for M3 students. In 2016, Dr. Speights began work with the COM’s Bridge to Clinical Medicine Program as Clinical Faculty Advisor. The Bridge Program is part of the COM’s outreach effort aimed at improving the numbers of mission-based students admitted to medical school. In 2017, he was named Director of the Bridge Program. Dr. Speights has always had an interest in improving access to college and professional school for all students, but because of his background the COM’s Pre-college and College programs particularly interested him.
Upon starting with the College of Medicine, he became involved with SSTRIDE and other pathway programs the COM sponsors. This led to a profound interest in the Interdisciplinary Medical Sciences (IMS) major when it began in 2016. In 2018, Dr. Speights accepted the position of Assistant Dean of the IMS Division and was promoted to Associate Dean in 2019 and Senior Associate Dean in 2022. The position was a natural fit as it was able to blend many of his long standing interests together under one umbrella.
Dr. Speights holds Board Certification in Obstetrics and Gynecology and a Specialist Certification in HIV medicine. Dr. Speights has a deep interest in care for patients in rural areas, as well as ways to increase the numbers of providers and access to care for these populations.
In his free time, he enjoys spending time with his wife Heather and daughters, Sydney and Mallory.
